What is Ecstatic Dance?
Ecstatic Dance is a free-form, music-driven movement experience that invites people into deeper connection with their bodies, emotions, and inner world. Without choreography or instruction, participants are encouraged to move in ways that feel authentic in the moment—listening to sensation, impulse, and presence as primary guides. No prior dance or movement experience is needed; curiosity and willingness are enough.
At Ecstatic Dance Charlotte, the practice centers somatic awareness, personal agency, and mutual respect. There is no hierarchy and nothing to perform or achieve; each person is responsible for tending their own experience while contributing to a shared field of awareness. Ecstatic Dance offers space for exploration, expression, play, and connection—rooted in embodiment, consent, and co-creation.
What does the music journey feel like?
The music at Ecstatic Dance Charlotte is curated as a living journey rather than a fixed genre. You may experience waves of rhythm and stillness, intensity and softness, play and grounding. The music is designed to support presence in the body—meeting you where you are and inviting movement to unfold naturally, without instruction or expectation.
Rather than telling you how to move, the music creates a container that allows expression, exploration and connection to emerge in your own way.
Is this a spiritual or religious event?
Ecstatic Dance Charlotte is an embodied movement experience, not a spiritual or religious ceremony. While some people experience the dance as meditative, emotional, or expansive, there is no belief system, teaching, or doctrine being offered.
You may notice altars in the space, which are intentionally created as places for reflection, intention, and grounding—not for worship or religious practice. They are offered as optional points of meaning and inspiration and you’re free to engage with them in whatever way feels authentic to you, or not at all.
For many, this experience is best described as conscious clubbing—a space to move, feel and connect without substances, performance or expectation.
What does participation look like at Ecstatic Dance Charlotte?
Ecstatic Dance Charlotte is a participatory experience rather than a spectator event. The container is designed to support safety, presence, and embodied exploration, and being watched can feel activating or unsafe for some participants.
Everyone is invited to engage at their own pace. Movement can be big or small, seated or standing, active or still. If you need rest or grounding, we offer a designated nervous system regulation corner where you can pause, breathe, and tend to yourself without observing the dance floor.
We ask that participants refrain from watching others from the edges of the room and instead stay connected to their own experience. This supports mutual respect, consent, and a shared sense of safety within the space.
How is connection and consent navigated on the dance floor?
At Ecstatic Dance Charlotte, consent is an active, mutual, and ongoing practice. Connection begins with presence and acknowledgment—making eye contact and extending a hand to invite another person to dance. If the invitation is welcomed, the other person may extend their hand in return and join. If not, they are free to turn their hand and bow out.
Both responses are honored equally. A “no” is not a rejection—it is an act of self-honoring, and we celebrate people listening to and respecting their own boundaries. Consent can be changed at any time and anyone may step away from a connection whenever they choose.
This practice supports emotional safety, nervous system regulation and mutual respect, allowing connection to arise from choice rather than expectation. We trust each person to listen to their body, honor others’ boundaries and participate with care in the shared field.
What does radical self-responsbility mean in this space?
At Ecstatic Dance Charlotte, radical self-responsibility means staying attuned to your own body, emotions, energy, and limits while participating in the shared experience. Each person is responsible for tending their own regulation, honoring consent, and making choices that support both personal well-being and collective safety.
This includes listening to your body, taking breaks when needed, using the nervous system regulation corner, and asking for support when appropriate—without expecting others to manage or fix your experience. Practicing self-responsibility allows the space to remain non-hierarchical, respectful, and co-created through awareness and care.
Can I talk during the dance?
Ecstatic Dance Charlotte is a non-verbal space during the dance, allowing participants to listen inward and stay connected to the body and the music. Communication happens through movement, eye contact, and consent-based interaction.
Quiet check-ins or practical communication are always welcome when needed. We simply ask that conversation be taken off the dance floor and kept minimal so the dance floor remains a space of presence and immersion for everyone.
Is this a phone-free space?
Phones and cameras are not allowed during the dance. We invite participants to fully unplug and be present with their bodies and the shared experience.
You’re welcome to take photos or videos before and after the event, but we ask that phones remain off and stored away once the dance begins. This supports privacy, nervous system safety, and a sense of trust within the space.
Why is arriving on time and staying for the full experience important?
Arriving on time is an important part of the Ecstatic Dance Charlotte container. The opening circle sets the tone for the experience and includes shared guidelines around presence, consent, and care for the space. Being present from the beginning helps create a sense of safety, coherence, and mutual respect for everyone.
Participants are encouraged to stay through the full arc of the dance. Remaining until the end supports personal integration and honors the shared field we co-create together. While we understand that life happens, arriving late or leaving early can be disruptive to the container, and we ask that this practice be approached with awareness and intention.
How can I best arrive for the experience?
Preparing for Ecstatic Dance Charlotte is less about doing and more about arriving. Please come rested, nourished, and present, wearing comfortable clothing that allows for ease of movement. We will be dancing barefoot, as this supports grounding and connection to the body.
Bring water to stay hydrated and an open heart to whatever may unfold. You’re encouraged to listen to your body throughout the dance, take breaks as needed and use the nervous system regulation corner for rest or grounding. Ceremonial cacao is available for purchase, and we recommend bringing cash or Venmo, if you’d like to partake.
Do I have to dance barefoot?
Ecstatic Dance Charlotte is primarily a barefoot dance space, as dancing barefoot supports grounding, sensory awareness and connection to the body. Socks are always welcome, and if you prefer to wear shoes, we ask that they be clean, indoor-only shoes used exclusively for the dance floor.
This helps maintain a safe, clean, and respectful environment for everyone. We encourage you to choose what feels most supportive for your body while honoring the shared space.
What should I wear?
Wear whatever helps you feel comfortable, expressive and embodied. Many people treat Ecstatic Dance Charlotte as conscious clubbing—dressing up, playing with style and moving freely—while others keep it simple and ease-focused.
We dance barefoot (socks or clean indoor-only shoes are welcome) and layers are encouraged. There’s no dress code beyond what allows you to move, sweat, and feel like yourself.
Are substances allowed prior to or during the event?
Ecstatic Dance Charlotte is held as a substance-free experience. We invite participants to arrive clear and present, without the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs.
This supports embodied awareness, nervous system regulation, authentic connection and shared safety within the space. Choosing to dance sober helps maintain clarity, consent, and care for oneself and the community.
What if strong emotions come up?
Movement can bring a wide range of emotions to the surface, and all of that is welcome here. Nothing needs to be fixed, hidden, or amplified.
You’re encouraged to listen to your body and respond in ways that feel supportive—whether that means continuing to move, slowing down, pausing or stepping into the nervous system regulation corner for rest or grounding. You are always in your choice.
If you need additional support, trauma-informed volunteers are available to help hold the space. They are present to offer calm, grounded support when needed, while honoring your autonomy and boundaries. Tending to yourself is part of caring for the shared field.
Is Ecstatic Dance Charlotte open to children?
Ecstatic Dance Charlotte is held as an 18+ experience. This allows participants to fully engage in the dance without the added responsibility of supervising children and helps preserve a consistent, adult-focused container.
